History of the Chiberta golf course
|
|
| CHIBERTA : One of the nicest basque golf course, it features several links and inlands. One can find holes close to the ocean coast in true English style, while other holes are surrounded by pine trees. |

|
The whole story began in 1924 with an announcement that the company “Biarritz Anglet La Foret” had become the owner of 150 hectares of forest and sand dunes with a brief to develop a golf course.

In 1927, the famous architect Tom Simpson settled in the area at the request of the Duke of Windsor, the initiator of the golf project.
From 1928 until 1938, Chiberta grew to become one of the key locations in the Basque Coast for sport and style. It was the place to be and be seen.
But that’s not all. Chiberta also became a source of inspiration for poets. The Comte de Jouffroy d’Abbans wrote: “From the club-house, the course follows a gentle slope towards the ocean. The landscape blends various elements in a harmonious way, creating an enchanting environment in a magical setting”.
In 1940, the quietness of Chiberta would be shaken by the war. In 1951, Mr Van Daele took over the land which was badly in need of development.

| In 1961 a wealthy business man, Mr Chassagny, fell in love with the location and started the necessary work to revamp the course.
In 2002, the development of a new 9 holes (“l’Imperatrice”) provided a training platform for teenagers and adult beginners, as well as for the more experienced players.
A magnificent walk on the coast protects the links from the beach and prevents fairways close to the shore from becoming covered by the sand after storms.
With wind and sand, Chiberta is a course that you can play all year round, even right after a strong storm that one can have in this region of France! By the way, keep in mind that the wind can seriously impact your handicap!
Ninety years after its creation, Chiberta is still the jewel in the crown when it comes to playing golf in the Basque Country.
